Bath Time Tips for When You Need to Unwind

Winter weather means we get to indulge a bit in cozy things! For those of us in Houston, this doesn’t happen too often. Since we don’t really have our own winters here, we have to wait for a cold front to pass through before we feel any kind of chill. Of course, this isn’t always a bad thing. It’s nice when winter comes to visit, but doesn’t overstay its welcome. Still, the recent freezing temperatures got me thinking of ways to stay warm. I didn’t want to go outside and do anything too crazy. Bundling up in coats, scarves, and boots can be fun every once in a while, but man, is it a lot of work! Some nights, it’s easier to just stay in. Bath time is one of the coziest, warmest things I can think of. It’s perfect – quiet, relaxing, and totally customizable. I also love the idea of planning my baths in advance. It gives me something to look forward to, especially if I’m out running errands in the cold. What better to go home to? In my home, any form of alone time is hard to come by, so whenever I’m able to carve out some me-time, I have to make it count. Here are some ways you can spice up your bath.

I love having everything in its place, ready to go whenever I need it. Again, time is of the essence for me, so the quicker I can make something happen, the better. For this, I have a basket that stays fully stocked. Depending on your bathroom setup, you can leave this basket right there on the tub (great for garden tubs), or you can keep it under your sink and break it out when you’re ready to use it. This basket should have everything you need for a successful bath. In mine, I like to keep bath salts, bubble bath, bath bombs, essential oils, and my candles. Oh, and don’t forget your matches! Candles won’t do much good if you can’t light them. In addition to these bath staples, be sure to have some fresh wash cloths on hand, a loofa, or a scrub brush in the basket. Another thing that could be fun is a body scrub. Remember – this is just for you, so add whatever you like to your basket!

I love bath salts and bath bombs. Not only do they soften the water and do amazing things for your skin, but they come in all kinds of relaxing scents. Some of them even bubble up when you put them in the water! I’m a big fan of those. If you haven’t tried them, they’re definitely worth a shot. I like to keep a few different scents on hand. That way, I can customize my bath so that it’s different each time. Maybe I’m in the mood for a relaxing lavender one day, but I want a more invigorating lemongrass another. I know I’m prepared for anything!

Maybe you don’t feel like busting out the salts on this particular day. You can still make your bath more luxurious with a strategic blend of essential oils. What I love about these oils is that you can use as little or as much as you want. You can mix and match scents to get the feel you’re going for, and each bath can be different from the last.

Candles…my favorite part of bath time. There’s nothing that can quite ruin a relaxing time like jarring fluorescent bathroom lighting. So, what can you do? Candles are perfect for illuminating your bath time and adding another layer of scent to your overall ambience. What’s great about candles is that you can have multiple that you place around the tub and the bathroom. You can easily create various layers and depths of lighting that you wouldn’t be able to with typical bathroom lighting.

Finally, your bath time jams are pretty crucial. You gotta get this one right! I like to have a playlist of songs that would be good for the bath on my phone. I add to it as I hear a song that I think would work, so I can save it for later. You can even have multiple playlists that could work for a bath. For example, maybe you could have a completely instrumental playlist, or another one for slow jams and R&B. Whatever you’re into will work – it’s your me-time! What’s your favorite way to unwind?
